What Are Corporate Actions?

A corporate action is any event decided by a listed company’s board or approved by shareholders that materially affects its securities. In Singapore, all material corporate actions are disclosed on SGXnet. Monitor announcements at SGX Company Announcements.

Types of Corporate Actions on SGX

Dividends/Distributions: Cash payments from profits. For S-REITs, distributions are quarterly/semi-annual. See DPU.

Rights Issues: Existing shareholders offered new shares at a discount to fund acquisitions/debt reduction. Rights are tradeable on SGX. See Rights Issue Singapore.

Bonus Shares / Scrip Dividend: Additional shares issued at no cost proportional to existing holdings. See Scrip Dividend Singapore.

Stock Splits: Shares divided into more at proportionally lower price to improve liquidity.

Share Consolidations: Shares combined into fewer at higher price — common in penny stock restructurings.

Mergers, Acquisitions, and Delistings

M&A: Shareholders receive cash, acquirer shares, or combination. Crossing the 30% ownership threshold triggers a mandatory general offer (MGO) under Singapore’s Takeover Code. Privatisation: Major shareholder buys out remaining shareholders and company delists. Delisting: Company exits SGX voluntarily or by regulation. See REIT Acquisition Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are corporate actions in Singapore stocks?

Corporate actions are events initiated by a listed company that affect shareholders’ holdings or value — including dividend payments, rights issues, bonus shares, stock splits, M&A, and delistings.

What is a rights issue in Singapore?

A rights issue offers existing shareholders the right to buy new shares at a discount to fund acquisitions or reduce debt. Rights are tradeable on SGX during the subscription period. Non-subscribers face ownership dilution.

How does a stock split affect my portfolio?

A 2-for-1 split doubles your shares and halves the price, leaving total portfolio value unchanged. Your CDP holdings are updated automatically — no action needed.

What happens if I do not subscribe to a rights issue?

Your ownership percentage is diluted by new shares issued. You can sell your rights on SGX during the trading period to recover some value, or let them lapse (forfeiting the value).

How do I know when a corporate action is happening?

All material corporate actions are announced on SGXnet. Subscribe to alerts via your brokerage app or CDP notifications. Key dates: announcement date, record date, XD date, and action deadline.
