The Singapore Money Playbook by The Kopi Notes: 7 money mindset shifts that can change how you think about money

Most personal finance advice fails Singaporeans for a simple reason: it was not written for Singapore.

You read that you should max out your 401(k). You do not have one. You read that you need 25 times your annual spending to retire. Nobody tells you what CPF LIFE does to that number. The Singapore Money Playbook is the missing layer: the same good principles, translated into the system you actually live in.

Inside the Playbook: seven shifts, in order

Cash → CPF → Protection → Investing → Cost → Behaviour → Freedom. Each chapter runs the same four beats: the old way of thinking, the shift, one worked example, one thing to do this week.

01 · CLARITY

Cash isn't wealth

Safe from loss is not safe from erosion. The three jobs your cash does, and where each pile should actually sit.

02 · FOUNDATION

CPF isn't locked money

Why CPF is your highest-quality asset, what each account is really for, and the bonus tier on your first dollars.

03 · PROTECTION

Insurance isn't optional, it's maths

Protection protects your compounding. Size the gap instead of guessing, and see why bundling hides the cost.

04 · SIMPLICITY

You don't need to be good at picking stocks

Investing well and picking well are different skills. Why familiar feels safe and isn't, and the cost of waiting until you're ready.

05 · COST

Fees quietly destroy wealth

A fee is not a slice of your return, it is a slice of your future. The four places fees hide and the one-number test.

06 · TIME

Time matters more than timing

You have to be right twice to time a market. Gains arrive in bursts; build a default instead of a prediction.

07 · FREEDOM

Financial freedom isn't a number, it's a ratio

The TKN Financial Freedom Ratio, the Singapore adjustment nobody makes, and the honest catch about retiring early.

7chapters, one idea each
20pages, a one-kopi read
2formats: PDF and Notion

The idea the whole playbook is built around

Financial Freedom Ratio = Investable assets ÷ Annual spending

CPF-adjusted target = (Annual spending − Annual CPF LIFE payout) × 25

Most people in Singapore are saving toward a retirement number that already includes an income CPF LIFE will pay them anyway. Chapter 07 shows what the adjustment is worth, and exactly where it stops working if you want to stop before 65.

From the team behind The Kopi Notes

The Kopi Notes is Singapore's plain-English guide to personal finance: hundreds of sourced guides and over a hundred free calculators on CPF, investing, insurance and retirement, read by thousands of Singaporeans every month.

The Playbook is deliberately evergreen. It never quotes today's interest rate or fund fee, because those change; every live number sits on the site where it is kept current, and every chapter links you to the calculator that runs it on your own figures. It is free because the thinking should be, and it stays free.

This is for you if

  • You are the first in your family to have a monthly surplus and nobody handed you a plan
  • You have a CPF balance you check once a year and a vague number for "retirement"
  • You have read a lot of American money advice and keep translating it in your head
  • You want to understand your money, not be sold a product

It is not for you if

  • You want a stock tip, a fund pick, or someone to tell you what to buy
  • You want today's best rates in a PDF (they are on the site, updated)
